Google Crazy Logo – Use AOL Search

John Slimak | No Comments »

Ok I usually like Google’s variety of logos used on the home page. I find the reason behind the change something I can use sometimes throughout the day. But today’s change is just wrong. Kicking the computer on at 6:30 am to a mass of bouncing balls is just wrong. Today I will be using AOL to perform my searches to avoid the balls from hell.

Speaking of AOL – are you aware that you can use AOL to get the most accurate search results from Google. There are no filters or any caching issues with AOL. So if you need your true ranking hit www.aol.com and use the Google search!

Google Local New Presentation in Organic

Is Google making another change?

Last week while logged into my Google account I witness a new presentation to the Google’s organic search result.

It looks like they are testing to see if people prefer the Google Local combined with Organic results. My first thought is “I hate it” – not because its change (I welcome change) but knowing that Google still has issues with the algorithm for Local. Combining the two just doesn’t seem right in today search results.

But after a few days I did realize Google’s true intent here is simple – they are pushing “Google Local” to become the “Worlds Best” online phone directory. Let face it Yellow Pages and Yellow Book (if there is a difference) are dying dinosaurs. I have for years advise clients to stay clear of both because they promise but never deliver compare to a professional search company. In fact (after talking to sales people in these companies) they go after the people who are lacking web sites because they know they are uninformed about the web. How many times do you see in your Organic results a listing from one of these directories? You don’t and with this change Google will make sure you will never see them again!

Get found on Bing

Well, for all of you asking the question, “Is Bing for Real?” The answer got a lot simpler last night Yahoo’s announcement: a 10-year deal with Microsoft making Bing the Search platform for both companies!

PCWorld had a great breakdown on the future situation.  Here are the main items of concern for your company…

  • Bing will be the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search platform for Yahoo!
  • The term is for 10 years
  • It could take up to 2 years to get completed (still needs regulatory approval).

What does this mean for your site?  You need to make sure your SEO is set up for Bing and do it NOW!

Bing – Bing – Bing

Ok, so everyone has heard or seen Bing in the past few weeks. Some people love the new look and feel of Microsoft’s newest attempt to keep up with Google. Other people are still wondering what happened to Microsoft Live! We will be testing the new search platform over the next week to identify the consistency of the results. My only advice is not to overreact and start changing SEO structure to be found on Bing just yet! Google is still holding the #1 spot in search engine by at least 60-70%.

Why do companies lie on Google Local ?

John Slimak | 1 Comment »

Today I was at a client’s office putting together a new Google local campaign for their product and services.  About five minutes into the conversation one of the partners “Googled” Indianapolis SEO and only one site came on the Google map (authoritative One-Box).  The question was proposed, “Why are you not on this list and why there is only one company listed?”  I explained that many factors go into the 10-pack, 3-pack, 2-pack and authoritative One-Box.  But in this direct case I would not show up going forward due to the lack of accurate information being used by companies to Google. Currently there are companies buying PO boxes, using mailing address of residence of employees to try and demonstrate a fake business location within the cities limits.

My clients next question was simple, “You can lie to Google and get away with it?”  – NO

I caution my clients not to take the short cuts and misrepresent your “real” office location to be found in Google Maps!  Google always has a way of determining who is playing fair and who is not.  Plus the last thing you want is a potential client to perform a search on their cell phone and show up at your employee’s apartment building looking for your company.

The next time you search for a product/service and a business address is given, call the company and verify their location.  If the person on the other end tells you the same as on Google Local then you made a solid connection.  If you find that the address on Google Local is not the real address (and the listing was created and edited by the owner) then the company is starting off your relationship with a lie!

Remember: never lie to your wife or to Google. They will always find out and the results are never good!
